Dr John Swart B Compt (SA) MBL (SA) D Com (Pretoria) – Managing Director
After completing articles, John completed 2 years of National Service in the SADF as Lieutenant in the office of the Inspector General. After National Service, he worked as accountant for 4 years before joining Sanlam where he formed the Sanlam Corporate unit specializing in investments and employee benefits. In 2001 he co-founded the FIRSTGLOBAL Group and has since been working as investment manager and business consultant.
John bought Shakama Game Lodge and commenced with general game farming in 1999. He has a passion for nature, South African game and the Waterberg.
John is also a director of Realvest Property Assignments (Pty) Ltd and several property investment companies.
AB De Villiers – Director
AB is a professional cricket player. He is a member of the South African Proteas, Titans and Royal Challengers Bangalore (Indian IPL team)
AB matriculated at Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool in 2002, then moved on to the University of Pretoria where he played cricket for their 1st team but was soon contracted to play full time cricket for South Africa.
AB is currently captain of the ODI Proteas and Vice Captain of the Test side Proteas. AB is the number one ranking batsman in the world (in both Tests and ODI rankings). He holds several world records including the fastest 50, 100 & 150 runs scored.
In his spare time, AB is studying and has already completed a number business courses through the University of Cape Town.
AB has always been fond of South Africa and its wildlife and joined Shakama Wildlife as shareholder and director in 2014 where he intends to spend more of his future time.
AB brings to Shakama his passion for excellence and networking abilities to procure the best of resources.
Dr Lance Vogel B.Sc, B.Sc (Hons), M.Sc (University of Cape Town, 1982), M.Eng (University of California at Berkeley, USA, 1984), PhD (Computational and Applied Mathematics, University of the Witwatersrand, 1993)
Lance is currently Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for the Analytics Group of companies. He was part of the management team that bought the Investec Analytics business in 2004 from Investec Asset Management, having been responsible for the management of their multi-manager funds since the last quarter of 2002.
Lance joined stockbrokers JD Anderson (JDA) in 1993 having spent 12 years in the South African nuclear industry at the Atomic Energy Corporation at Pelindaba near Pretoria. At JDA he was responsible for establishing an equity derivatives research operation. Following the purchase of JDA by Swiss Bank Corporation (SBC) in 1995, Lance was responsible for derivative product development and marketing at subsidiary SBC Warburg in Johannesburg. He was consistently rated as one of the top three South African derivatives analysts in the Financial Mail annual stockbroker survey from 1995 to 1997 and in 1998 was rated as the top derivatives analyst in the Finance Week survey. In 1998 Lance moved to Peregrine Structuring where he was again responsible for derivative product development and marketing.
Lance has been a director in Shakama since 2006 and enjoys being part of the management and advisory team.
Dr Abraham Benjamin De Villiers MBChB (Pretoria) MSc Sports Medicine (Pretoria) – Director
AB (Snr) completed two years of National Service in the SADF as Medical Officer. After working as Snr Medical Officer at the Klerksdorp Provincial Hospital for another 2 years, he started practicing as General Medical Practitioner in Bela-Bela where he has been based since 1982.
AB (Snr) played rugby for the Tuks 1st team, completed several ultra races and two comrades marathons. He is still an active golfer and enjoys the African bushveld on 4×4 safari’s whenever he finds the chance.
AB (Snr) lives at Kia Ora estate, a short drive from Shakama where he helps to oversee the general management of Shakama Wildlife.
AB (Snr) brings to Shakama his knowledge of medicine, science and the Waterberg.
Sean Weber Diploma in Game Ranging & Game Farm Management (Damelin) – General Manager
Sean joined Shakama in 2006.
He completed his diploma in 2003 with distinctions in all Game Ranging and Game Farm Management subjects. In addition he completed various courses including FGASA level 1, Eco Training in Game Ranging, Eco Ranger training comprising Tracking, Nature guiding, Dangerous game, Bush craft and Survival. In 2007 he did a further course in Game farm management and in 2012 he obtained the Commercial Certificate for Property Practitioners (CCPP) through the University of Pretoria.
Sean worked as Camp manager for CC Africa and Farm manager for the Farm-Inn hotel where he gained skills in hand raising of mammals and captive care of carnivores and antelope species during 2004 and 2005.
Sean has been an integral part of Shakama’s game breeding programs and the introduction of rare species from the start.
